What is a
RSS Feed?

What is a RSS Feed?

Have you seen the orange rss button buttons on the Internet and not known what they were about, almost afraid to click on them? Well don't feel bad, it wasn't that long ago when I was clueless about them too!

These little orange RSS Icon buttons are really cool and can save you time and grief. The RSS stands for " Really Simple Syndication," and there are a number of ways that they can help you!

Let's say there was a particular web site out there like Home Business Web Link that you frequently visit to see if there is new information provided, or maybe new pages added. The old way of keeping track of the page or the web site was to add them into your favorite places in your browser.

When web sites display that little orange RSS Icon button, it will provide a RSS feed to your RSS reader or even your browser so that you can see a snip it of information in a glance, and you decide if it deserves your time to look into the information further.

To get the information, you must subscribe to the RSS feed by inserting the destination URL into your feed reader, or your My Yahoo! customized home page, or your My MSN customized home page, or your Google customized page. More on this later . . .

More cool stuff ...

There's another cool thing about that little orange RSS Icon button too. Have you ever subscribed to a web site's e-zine to get bombarded with emails from them, their sponsors, and all kinds of other spam you didn't think you were signing up for by giving them your email address?

I think its happened to all of us. I read where someone thought that the " RSS " on those orange buttons should mean "Really Simple Subscription," and I would have agreed with them for this reason ...

When you subscribe to a feed using that little orange RSS Icon button
( Yeah, I know - I'm going overboard with the little RSS button, but that because I think it's "really cool" ), it's just a little click of a "X" box, and the feed is gone forever. It's so easy to subscribe and unsubscribe, which is why it could be called " Really Simple Subscription."

How do you get started with RSS?

Go ask an expert!

LOL !! I'm just kidding! ;-)

Getting started is easy. Download a free RSS Reader so that you can read feeds that you want to subscribe to. ( If you don't want to download software, use this link to find other resources. ) This is special software that allows you to receive and read RSS feeds.

For Windows RSS reader software, click http://www.rssreader.com/

For Mac reader software, click http://www.newsgator.com/

Once you have downloaded the software, here is what you need
to do . . .

Right Click MenuRight-click (a Control-click for Mac users ) on any orange RSS button on a site, news source, or a blog that you have an interest in reading their RSS Feed. You can start by right-clicking this orange RSS Icon button.

Then select Copy Shortcut ( Copy Link to Image of Right-Click Menu
Clipboard for Mac users ), and paste that
URL into your RSS Reader.

That's all there is to it!
