Starting a Home Business,
A Problem in Your Community?
Starting a home business in your community might seem like a pretty simple ordeal. However special attention should be paid to the laws and regulations when starting a home business in your home or on your property. Information about the laws and regulations governing the use of your home can be found in a variety of places.
I would like to help you avoid the pitfalls and head aches of starting a business in your home. So before you jump in and get your feet wet and maybe get in over your head ... how about reading what I have got to say?
Mom always said "Don't put the horse before the cart" and "You need to have your ducks in a row." OK - Sorry, just trying to make a point. Do a little homework here and save some trouble down the road.
Property Deeds
Property Deeds can restrict the use of your property and home in starting a business. A property Deed is defined as a referring document to a Title for a piece of property. Property Deeds will be on file in your county or parish offices.
Home Owners Associations or Housing Developments
Home owners associations, housing developments, and apartments can have restrictions to the use of your home or apartment for starting a business in your home. These associations and developments usually have rules and information readily available in print.
City or Town Restrictions
There could be laws or restrictions in starting a home business in your city or town. The best place to find information of this type is at your city or town hall.
Some Examples on what to look for when Starting a Home Business
Here are some examples that readily come to my mind to look for that may restrict you from starting a home business:
- Home business operations should take place inside a home or inside an approved building.
- Employees may not be allowed to work in your home or at your home business.
- Restrictions on signs and advertising for your home business.
- Possible restrictions on noise, heat, and odors from your home business.
- There may be restrictions on neighborhood traffic and / or parking for a business at your home.
- Possible restrictions on office hours or hours of operation for your business.
- Zoning restrictions may restrict the types of home businesses permitted, as in example: animal related home based business, repairing of automobiles and other motorized equipment, beauty parlors or salons, massage parlors, or adult type home based businesses.
Starting a home business without your neighbors knowing about it can be a huge mistake. Consult your neighbors when in close quarters, especially if they always have their nose in your business anyway. Hear their concerns and ask opinions. If you can get their interest and some sort of involvement in your idea of starting a home business, they seem to me to be a lot less hostile! Remember, be friendly even if they are grumpy! ;-)
