Starting a Home Business, A Problem in Your Community?

When starting a home business in your community, special attention should be paid to the laws and regulations attached to your home or property. Information about the laws and regulations can be found in a variety of places.

I would like to help you avoid the pitfalls and head aches of starting a business in your home. So before you jump in and get your feet wet and maybe get in over your head ...

Mom always said "Don't put the horse before the cart" and "You need to have your ducks in a row." OK - Sorry, just trying to make a point.

If you live in a residential or single family home community, there may be restrictions in starting a business in your home.

Property Deeds.

Property Deeds can restrict the use of your property and home in starting a business.  A property Deed is defined as a referring document to a Title for a piece of property. Property Deeds will be on file in your county or parish offices.

Home Owners Associations or Housing Developments

Home owners associations, housing developments, and apartments can have restrictions to the use of your home or apartment for starting a business in your home.  These associations and developments usually have rules and information readily available in print.

City or Town Restrictions.

There could be laws or restrictions in starting a home business in your city or town.  Examples of these restrictions may or may not include:

  • Home business operations should take place inside a home or inside an approved building.
  • Employees may not be allowed to work in your home or at your home business.
  • Restrictions on signage and advertising for your home business.
  • Possible restrictions on noise, heat, and odors from your home business.
  • There may be restrictions on neighborhood traffic and / or parking for a business at your home.
  • Possible restrictions on office hours or hours of operation for your business.
  • Zoning restrictions may restrict the types of home businesses permitted, as in example: animal related home based business, repairing of automobiles and other motorized equipment, beauty parlors or salons, massage parlors, or adult type home based businesses.

Starting a home business without your neighbors knowing about it can be a huge mistake.  Consult your neighbors when in close quarters, especially if they always have their nose in your business anyway.

Hear their concerns and ask opinions. If you can get their interest and some sort of involvement in your idea of starting a home business, they seem to me to be a lot less hostile! Remember, be friendly even if they are grumpy! ;-)
